Cuttage of Verbena × hybrida

Glandularia x hybrida (hort. ex Groenl. & Rümpler) G. L. Nesom & Pruski

Cuttage of Verbena × hybrida is the primary method of vegetative propagation for variety series that do not transmit ornamental traits through seeds. The process is based on the crop's high capacity for adventitious root formation in stems.

In the reference 6 varieties crop Common Garden Verbena, where this is mentioned in the description.

For propagation, terminal shoots 7–10 cm long are used, preferably non-flowering, which are cut just above a leaf node. The lower leaves are removed, and the cut surfaces are treated with charcoal to prevent rot. Loose, well-drained mixtures based on peat and sand are used as a substrate. Optimal conditions for rooting include a substrate temperature of 22–24°C and bright, indirect light.

Unlike many other ornamental crops, Verbena × hybrida requires moderate moisture and less intensive misting, which minimizes the risk of fungal infections such as Botrytis. The root system usually forms in 2–3 weeks. In commercial production, after successful rooting, pinching the shoot while leaving at least two nodes is a mandatory step to ensure the formation of a high-quality bush.
