Bedding plants — Verbena hybrida

Glandularia x hybrida (hort. ex Groenl. & Rümpler) G. L. Nesom & Pruski

The use of Verbena hybrida as an annual for creating borders, flower beds, and dense carpet-like plantings. The crop is valued for its tillering capacity and its ability to form well-defined color lines.

In the reference 13 varieties crop Common Garden Verbena, where this is mentioned in the description.

Verbena hybrida is used in landscape design as a compact or trailing plant with a height of 20 to 50 cm, allowing it to be used for creating low and dense flower bed features. Unlike tall Verbena species, it tolerates trimming well, maintaining defined contours in group plantings.

To form a continuous carpet, seedlings are planted at intervals of 25–30 cm, which ensures the plants close their canopy by July and suppresses weed growth. The plant requires sunny locations and high-quality drainage, as waterlogging is critical for the crop's development in dense plantings.

Due to the slow initial development of the seedlings, early sowing for transplants in February–March is necessary to ensure flowering from the beginning of June. Adhering to these timelines allows for well-developed specimens to be obtained by the time of planting, ready for rapid expansion in flower bed conditions.
