Powdery mildew — Phlox paniculata

Phlox paniculata L.

A fungal disease caused by Erysiphe cichoracearum that affects leaves, stems, and flower stalks, leading to desiccation and reduced winter hardiness of the plant.

The causal agents of powdery mildew on Phlox paniculata are fungi of the order Erysiphales, predominantly Erysiphe cichoracearum (synonym Golovinomyces cichoracearum), specifically the form Erysiphe cichoracearum D.C. f. phlogis Jacz. Initial symptoms appear in early summer as a loose, white mycelial coating on the lower parts of the plant.

As the disease progresses, the coating becomes dense, acquiring a felt-like texture and a grayish-brown hue, covering all above-ground plant organs. This inhibits photosynthesis, causing leaves to curl and dry out, as well as an overall loss of aesthetic appeal and plant vigor. In breeding, resistance to the pathogen is evaluated as a phenotypic varietal trait without the identification of specific genetic markers.
