Sweet Cherry Tissue Necrosis

Sweet cherry tissue necrosis is a common symptom of a range of pathologies caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas syringae, the fungi Verticillium, Cytospora sorbicola, Calosphaeria pulchella, Clasterosporium carpophilum, or the PNRSV virus.

Bacterial necrosis, caused by Pseudomonas syringae, manifests as bark cankers and lesions on buds, leaves, and shoots, accompanied by vascular bundle destruction and gummosis. Verticillium wilt is characterized by darkening of the xylem in the form of rings when branches are cut, caused by vessel occlusion by tyloses and gum.
The fungi Cytospora sorbicola and Calosphaeria pulchella induce vascular necrosis and trunk cankers, while Clasterosporium carpophilum causes leaf and bark spotting. The PNRSV virus specifically affects leaf tissues, forming necrotic spots and rings. Sweet cherry breeding programs focus on phenotypic evaluation of resistance and the search for stable loci in germplasm, as specific genetic resistance markers have not yet been described.
