The main pathogens of barley are cyst-forming nematodes of the Avenae group, in particular Heterodera avenae and Heterodera latipons, which cause focal growth inhibition of plants and yield loss.

The species Heterodera avenae is characterized by high intraspecific variability, manifested in the presence of pathotypes capable of infecting various cereal genotypes. Identification of these populations is based on the reactions of standard differential cultivars, which allows for assessing their aggressiveness within the framework of specialized research.

Nematode infection is often latent and manifests as stunting, premature leaf yellowing, and root system deformation. In field conditions, the infestation is noticeable by focal plant growth retardation, while the presence of the cysts themselves on the roots is difficult to detect without special equipment.

Genetic resistance of barley to cyst-forming nematodes is provided by genes with the Rha prefix. The presence of these genes is a specific trait that is rarely found in the descriptions of general-purpose cultivars, as breeding for Rha resistance is conducted mainly within highly specialized programs.
