Root-knot nematodes of tomato

Solanum lycopersicum L.

Root-knot nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne cause damage to the tomato root system, manifested by the formation of characteristic swellings (galls), which leads to impaired nutrition and stunting of the plant's aerial parts.

In the reference 1 711 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary pathogens affecting tomatoes are Meloidogyne incognita, M. javanica, M. arenaria, and M. hapla. Root infestation manifests as galls, which, in cases of severe infection, coalesce into large masses, disrupting the vascular system. In the aerial parts, this is expressed as stunted growth, chlorosis, and diurnal wilting of the plants.

Genetic resistance of tomatoes to the species M. incognita, M. javanica, and M. arenaria is provided by the dominant gene Mi (or Mi-1), which triggers a hypersensitive response in reaction to the parasite's invasion. It is important to note that the effect of this gene generally does not extend to the species M. hapla.
