Abundance and Duration of Flowering — Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

The lifespan of an individual flower is a fundamental characteristic of hibiscus. Most varieties belong to ephemeral forms with a one-day corolla life cycle, while the 'Long Life' selection group is characterized by an extended ornamental period ranging from 3 to 7 days.

Flowering abundance is assessed by the number of simultaneously opened flowers on a bush or in total over the vegetation period. Since flower buds form at the tips of young shoots, flowering intensity directly correlates with the quality of shoot formation, which is stimulated by annual spring pruning.

The plant's flowering period can last from spring to late autumn, and when optimal lighting and nutrition conditions are provided, it can bloom almost year-round. Low flowering rates are most often associated with agrotechnical failures, such as deficiencies in light, nutrition, or the absence of regular canopy management.
