Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is a tropical plant that lacks adaptation mechanisms to cold. At temperatures near 0°C, ice crystals cause the destruction of cell membranes and damage to the vascular system, and exposure to -2°C for several hours leads to the death of the aerial part of the plant.
Industrial freezing of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis flowers is ineffective due to the high moisture content in the tissues. After thawing, the petals completely lose their turgor and aesthetic properties, becoming watery and losing structural integrity, which makes them unsuitable for storage using this method.
