In potted culture, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis requires annual spring pruning of shoots by 1/3 or 1/2 of their length, as flowering occurs on new growth. To restrict excessive vegetative growth and stimulate flowering, a moderate container size is used, increasing it only as the root system develops.

The plant has high requirements for light regime, needing 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Maintaining the substrate pH in the 6.0–6.8 range is critical to prevent chlorosis caused by impaired nutrient uptake.

Individual hibiscus flowers last 1–2 days; however, when conditions are met, the plant continuously forms new buds from March to October. Unlike many potted species, hibiscus does not require a mandatory dormancy period, but it is extremely sensitive to drafts and temperature drops below +10...+12 °C.
