Leafiness

Leafiness is an agronomic indicator reflecting the proportion of leaves in the total plant biomass, expressed as a percentage. It is of key importance for assessing the nutritional value of crops and the intensity of photosynthetic processes.

Leafiness represents the ratio of leaf mass to the total mass of the plant's above-ground organs. This indicator is manifested through the ratio of leaf blades to stems, which directly determines the nutritional value of forage crops, as leaves contain significantly more vitamins and protein than stems.

The value of leafiness depends on the genetic characteristics of the variety, the current stage of plant development, and the applied agricultural practices. Generally, the proportion of leaves is higher at the beginning of the growing season and gradually decreases towards the flowering and maturation stages, when the mass of stems and generative organs increases.

During variety trials, leafiness is evaluated as part of the variety's agricultural utility through gravimetric analysis of green mass samples. High values are preferred for forage crops, while low values may indicate coarseness, which reduces digestibility and the nutritional quality of the product.
