A disease caused by the obligate fungus Podosphaera leucotricha, which infects apple buds, leaves, and fruits. The term "oidium" is incorrectly applied to this pathogen.

The pathogen is the ascomycete fungus Podosphaera leucotricha, which overwinters as mycelium inside infected buds. In spring, these produce infected "flag shoots," which serve as the primary source of spore dispersal to young leaves, inflorescences, and ovaries.
Symptoms of infection include the appearance of a white or grey powdery coating, leaf deformation and abscission, stunted shoot growth, and the development of a specific "russet" netting on the surface of the fruits.
Breeding for resistance is based on the use of both polygenic traits and specific genes, among which Pl-1, Pl-2, Pl-w, and Pl-d are the most studied. Molecular marker methods are employed for their identification and pyramiding in breeding programs.
