Melon irrigation

Cucumis melo L.

Melon irrigation requires the use of drip systems to keep the aerial part of the plant dry, preventing fungal diseases. The critical irrigation schedule depends on the growth stages and concludes two weeks before harvest to maintain fruit quality.

In the reference 27 varieties crop Melon, where this is mentioned in the description.

The most effective method is drip irrigation, as overhead sprinkling increases air and leaf surface humidity, triggering the development of anthracnose, downy mildew, and powdery mildew. The technology includes irrigation during the 8–10 true leaf stage, during active flowering, and during fruit formation and sizing periods.

Irrigation is stopped completely 10–14 days before harvest to avoid rind cracking, watery flesh, and a decrease in sugar content. To prevent moisture evaporation and soil crusting, mulching is recommended, which, when using the drip method, minimizes the need for soil cultivation.

Excessive moisture, especially during the ripening phase, leads to a decrease in the concentration of dry matter and sugars and may also contribute to nitrate accumulation. A proper hydrotrophic regime promotes the development of a vigorous root system, which increases the intensity of photosynthesis and the overall productivity of the crop.
