Sesame shattering is manifested by the dehiscence of capsules upon maturation, which leads to crop losses of up to 50%. This trait is a key obstacle to the mechanized harvesting of the crop.

In the breeding of modern varieties, the focus has shifted to a gradual increase in capsule strength without compromising productivity, as resistance depends strongly not only on the genotype but also on weather conditions during the ripening period.
