Outdoor Agapanthus Cultivation

Deciduous species, such as Agapanthus campanulatus, possess greater frost hardiness, whereas evergreen species like Agapanthus africanus and Agapanthus praecox require mandatory lifting for winter or container cultivation. For successful growth in the ground, a key factor is protection against waterlogging, which causes rotting of the fleshy rhizomes; when planting in heavy soils, it is critical to install a drainage layer of sand or gravel.

The plant requires full sun exposure to prevent lodging of the flower stalks and to maintain flowering intensity. During planting, the root collar must be positioned strictly at the soil surface level. During the growing season, balanced irrigation is required with a reduction toward autumn, as well as the application of fertilizers with a prevalence of phosphorus and potassium, since an excess of nitrogen stimulates vegetative mass growth to the detriment of generative buds.
