In Agapanthus, the scape is a hollow, leafless stalk, the height of which is measured from the base of the leaf rosette to the base of the inflorescence. According to DUS test protocols, cultivars are classified into dwarf forms with a height of 20–60 cm and tall forms reaching 1.0–1.5 m or more.

Tall scapes are characterized by fragility and are prone to lodging in strong winds, which necessitates the use of supports. Agronomically, it has been established that low light conditions induce excessive stem elongation, increasing their vulnerability, while the removal of scapes after flowering prevents the plant from becoming exhausted by seed formation.
