Outdoor Alstroemeria Cultivation

When growing this crop outdoors, the condition of the rhizomes is a critical factor, as they are prone to rotting in stagnant moisture, especially during the winter period. The plant requires light, well-drained soils, and in heavy soils, the installation of raised beds is necessary. Although some hybrids can withstand frost down to –10 °C, the combination of low temperatures and soil moisture necessitates covering or digging up the rhizomes in harsh climatic conditions.

Alstroemeria cultivation involves a specific method of harvesting flower stalks: the stems are not cut with tools but are pulled from the ground, which stimulates the growth of new shoots. To prevent stem lodging in open ground, support nets are installed. Given the resupination of the leaves, it is important during phytosanitary inspections of the plantings to pay attention to the underside of the leaf, which, in this plant, is anatomically the adaxial surface.

The planting site should be protected from strong winds and direct midday sun, as excessive heat can halt flowering. During periods of extreme heat, the plant requires light partial shade to maintain its normal life cycle.
