Open-field melon cultivation

Cucumis melo L.

Growing melons in open fields requires high heat supply and strict adherence to vine pruning patterns. The crop is characterized by increased soil fertility requirements and pH sensitivity, while varietal suitability is determined by the fruit ripening rate.

In the reference 371 varieties crop Melon, where this is mentioned in the description.

Melon is an extremely heat-loving crop with an optimal development range of +25...+30 °C, although seeds only begin to germinate once soil temperatures exceed +12...+15 °C. The plant is drought-tolerant due to a strong root system, yet it is critically sensitive to high soil acidity, requiring a pH level of 6.5–7.0, and reacts negatively to an excess of chlorine salts.

The technology for vine pruning in open fields directly depends on the plant type. In varietal forms, female flowers are formed primarily on third-order shoots, which requires pinching the main vine above the 4th leaf. For hybrid forms, the pattern is different, as their primary yield is often formed on the main stem or second-order shoots.

During variety trials in open fields, the key indicator is the period from fruit set to ripening, which is critical for regions with a short summer season. Crop quality assessment includes not only phenological observations and counting the number of fruit sets, but also mandatory biochemical analysis of fruits for sugar and ascorbic acid content.
