Balsam is an extremely thermophilic crop sensitive to low temperatures. Planting in open ground is possible only after the threat of late frosts has passed, when nighttime temperatures consistently exceed +8...+12°C. In open areas, it is preferable to place balsam in partial shade or under the protection of tree canopies, as direct midday sun causes rapid wilting of the leaves.

The plant requires loose, fertile soil and regular watering to maintain constant moisture. An important biological feature of balsam in open ground is guttation—the active release of excess moisture through the leaf tips during periods of high air humidity. Under these conditions, the crop shows increased susceptibility to spider mites in hot weather and vulnerability to powdery mildew, which requires careful selection of hybrids for planting.
