Downy Mildew of Impatiens

A fungal disease of Impatiens caused by the oomycete Plasmopara obducens. It manifests as yellowing and curling of leaves, the formation of white mold, and leads to massive leaf drop and plant death.

The causal agent of Impatiens downy mildew is the oomycete Plasmopara obducens. The disease is characterized by specific damage to aerial organs, beginning with the appearance of chlorotic spots on the leaves and their downward curling, which mimics symptoms of moisture stress.

In the active stage, a white fuzzy sporulation of the pathogen forms on the underside of the leaves, as well as on stems and flower buds. Mass infection leads to stem defoliation due to intense leaf and bud drop, culminating in the complete death of the plant.
