The height of balsam is a key trait for cultivar classification and determining its ornamental use, measured from the soil level to the highest point of the flower stalk.

During variety testing, balsam height is determined as a quantitative trait in accordance with the DUS system. Low-growing compact forms reach 20–35 cm, medium-growing forms reach 40–60 cm, and high-growing representatives, such as Impatiens balsamina, can exceed 60–80 cm.

The height trait influences agrotechnical decisions: compact varieties are suitable for containers and borders, while taller forms require protection from wind due to the fragility of their succulent stems. Pinching of shoots is often required to maintain the ornamental value of high-growing varieties.
