Variety traits

Parthenocarpy in Cucumber

Cucumis sativus L.

The ability of cucumber to form fruits without pollination, characterized by the absence or presence of undeveloped seeds. The degree of the trait is determined as the ratio of the number of set fruits to the number of female flowers under isolation conditions.

In the reference 21 varieties crop Cucumber, where this is mentioned in the description.

The degree of parthenocarpy is evaluated as a percentage, with values above 50–70% considered high and indicating hybrid stability. Values of 30% or less indicate weak expression of the trait, at which point specimens are often subject to culling in the breeding process.

The expression of parthenocarpy depends on the genotype and growing conditions, including the age of the plant. The presence of parthenocarpy ensures yield in greenhouse conditions without pollinating insects and promotes the formation of uniform-shaped cucumbers; however, exposure to pollen can lead to fruit deformation.
