Vine growth characterizes the plant habit and directly influences the choice of cultivation technology. Varieties with strong vine growth require larger nutrient areas and mandatory pruning of lateral shoots to redistribute nutrients to the fruits. At the same time, weakly vining forms, often called bush types, inherit this trait recessively and allow for higher planting density.

The selection of a variety based on the degree of vine growth determines the plant training strategy. Vigorously vining varieties require pinching of the main stem and side-shooting, as in many of them, ovaries form on second- and third-order shoots. Short-vined forms are more suitable for trellis cultivation and mechanized maintenance, as they occupy less space and require less manual labor for restricting vegetative mass growth.
