Wild species of the genus Alstroemeria are predominantly diploid with a base chromosome number of n=8, resulting in a diploid set of 2n=16. In commercial floriculture, most cultivars are interspecific hybrids that may have a triploid (2n=24) or tetraploid (2n=32) ploidy level.
A high ploidy level, especially in triploid forms, is often accompanied by pollen sterility, which limits the potential use of such plants in breeding as parental pairs.
