In its natural state, meadow fescue is a diploid species with a chromosome set of 2n = 14. For breeding purposes, artificial autotetraploid forms with a chromosome number of 2n = 4x = 28 have been created.

The use of tetraploids is aimed at correcting morphological parameters and increasing productivity; however, diploid cultivars remain dominant in commercial meadow fescue cultivation.
