The pathogens of the disease are represented by specialized forms of rust fungi, such as Puccinia festucae, Puccinia coronata f. sp. festucae, Uromyces festucae, and Puccinia graminis. The infection manifests as the formation of small oblong or streak-like uredinia, orange or rusty-brown in color, which darken to dark brown and black tones as teliospores develop.
