One of the key challenges in working with melons is the rapid formation of hollow hypocotyls, which significantly limits the contact area between the scion and rootstock tissues. Consequently, grafting must be performed at early developmental stages, while the size of the internal cavity is minimal, using methods such as splice grafting, insert grafting, or tongue-approach grafting.

Melons are characterized by high selectivity toward rootstocks; therefore, universal cucurbit rootstocks suitable for watermelons or cucumbers are often ineffective or cause growth suppression. To improve root system development and fruit biochemical composition, including the accumulation of ascorbic acid, the use of Cucurbita maxima species is promising; however, the success of a specific combination heavily depends on the scion genotype and requires individual selection to increase resistance to soil-borne pathogens, such as Fusarium wilt.
