When assessing oat lodging, experts visually determine the degree of stem inclination relative to the vertical axis. Susceptibility to lodging is most pronounced in tall-growing varieties, especially under conditions of excessive nitrogen fertilization or soil waterlogging. Lodging during the grain-filling period leads to significant yield losses during harvesting, poor aeration of the crop canopy, and a reduction in market grain quality.
