When assessing oat lodging, experts visually determine the degree of stem inclination relative to the vertical axis. Plant resistance is determined by a complex of morphological traits, including plant height, culm thickness, the degree of development of mechanical stem tissues, and the vigor of the root system.
Susceptibility to lodging is most pronounced in tall-growing varieties, especially under conditions of excessive nitrogen fertilization or soil waterlogging. Lodging during the grain-filling period leads to significant yield losses during harvesting, poor aeration of the crop canopy, and a reduction in market grain quality.
