Lodging — Kale

Brassica oleracea L. (Kale Group)

Lodging in kale is caused by genetically determined stem height and agronomic factors. The problem is most relevant for tall-growing varieties that reach 60–70 cm or more during the late stages of vegetation.

In the reference 8 varieties crop Kale, where this is mentioned in the description.

The susceptibility of kale to lodging directly depends on the morphological characteristics of the variety and growing conditions. An elongated stem makes plants vulnerable to leaning and breaking, especially with unbalanced nitrogen nutrition or improper plant spacing, which leads to excessive elongation.

Under field conditions, mechanical support in the form of horizontal netting is used to prevent tall forms from losing their upright position. The resistance of plants to this phenomenon is assessed within the framework of general variety testing methods through visual inspection and by recording the percentage of leaning individuals.
