Clubroot of kale

Brassica oleracea L. (Kale Group)

The causal agent of clubroot in kale (Brassica oleracea L., Kale group) is the soil-borne obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin, which causes pathological overgrowth of the root system.

In the reference 9 varieties crop Kale, where this is mentioned in the description.

The disease manifests in the formation of galls, outgrowths, and swellings on kale roots, resulting from hypertrophy and hyperplasia of cells under the influence of the pathogen. These damages impair the conductivity of the root system, leading to stunted growth, premature wilting of leaves, and chlorosis of the aerial parts of the plant.

At present, no specific races of the pathogen or unique resistance genes characteristic exclusively of the Kale group have been identified. The interaction between the pathogen and kale follows the general principles characteristic of the species Brassica oleracea, although visual diagnosis at early stages is difficult due to the latent nature of the infection in the soil.
