Clubroot of rapeseed

Brassica napus L.

A soil-borne disease of rapeseed caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae, characterized by the formation of pathological galls on the roots and disruption of plant nutrition.

In the reference 17 varieties crop Rapeseed, where this is mentioned in the description.

The pathogen is the slime mold Plasmodiophora brassicae, which exists as a multitude of physiological races with varying degrees of aggressiveness. The main symptom manifests on the roots as galls of various sizes, which are initially light-colored with a smooth surface but eventually darken, become rough, and disintegrate. The above-ground parts of infected plants suffer from chlorosis, loss of turgor, stunted growth, and general depletion, which in critical cases leads to the absence of pods and plant death.

Genetic resistance is the key method of managing the pathogen due to its high variability and long-term persistence of spores in the soil. Breeding programs utilize specific resistance genes, such as CRa, CRb, CRA05, and the WTS gene, which is induced in the root pericycle in response to infection. Modern breeding is focused on pyramiding multiple resistance genes into a single genotype to effectively overcome aggressive pathogen strains.
