The disease is caused by the obligate parasite Plasmodiophora brassicae. The infection manifests as galls and swellings on the roots and root crops, caused by abnormal plant cell proliferation. Secondary roots become distorted, losing their ability to properly absorb water and nutrients, which leads to leaf chlorosis and stunted growth of the root crop itself.
CR genes are used for breeding resistant turnip forms, including the CRa, CRb, and CRA05 loci. Resistance is often determined by several independently inherited genes, as confirmed by studies of European fodder turnip lines such as ECD04-05 and ECD04-10. Plant breeders employ marker-assisted selection to develop hybrids with pyramided resistance genes, taking into account the high genetic variability of the pathogen and the possibility of resistance breakdown by new virulent strains.
