Growing turnips in open fields requires crop rotation to prevent clubroot, as well as maintaining consistent soil moisture levels to ensure the formation of high-quality root crops.

For field-grown turnips, three sowing periods are practiced: early spring, late June to July for storage, and late autumn sowing for an early harvest. The crop should not be planted after other crucifers due to common pests, such as cruciferous flea beetles, aphids, whiteflies, and cutworms, as well as the risk of clubroot disease.

The plant requires neutral loamy or sandy loam soils, as development is suppressed in acidic environments. Due to its sensitivity to waterlogging, raised beds are used in heavy-soil areas. If cultivation practices are violated, including moisture deficit or untimely harvesting, the root crops become coarse.
