For early-maturing varieties, this period is 40–50 days, whereas mid- and late-maturing varieties reach technical maturity in 70–85 days. Specialized leafy forms can be ready for harvest as early as 22–25 days after emergence.

The short growing period allows turnips to be grown in several rotations per season, or used as a post-harvest crop or intercrop. In this regard, adhering to harvest dates is critical, as leaving root crops in the soil for too long leads to tissue coarsening, loss of flavor, and reduced storage life.
