Turnip Maturity Group

Brassica rapa L. var. rapa (L.) Thell.

An agronomic indicator that determines the length of the growing season from emergence to the technical maturity of the root. This classification is used for planning sowing and harvesting schedules.

The turnip maturity group is measured by the number of days from the appearance of full emergence until the root reaches commercially suitable size and quality. Varieties are categorized into early-maturing with a vegetation period of 55–60 days, mid-season with a period of 60–90 days, and late-maturing, which ripen in 90 days or more. Leafy turnip forms are distinguished as a separate category with a short development cycle of 22 to 36 days.

This trait determines sowing dates: early varieties are used for summer consumption, while mid- and late-maturing ones are selected for winter storage. Adhering to harvest dates according to the maturity group is critical, as leaving roots in the soil for too long leads to a deterioration in flesh texture, the formation of voids, and a decline in palatability.
