The disease is caused by the slime mold Plasmodiophora brassicae Woronin, which infects the root system. Characteristic galls and tumors form on the roots, which darken and decay as the plant develops. Root damage impairs nutrient and water uptake, leading to leaf wilting and the formation of loose or underdeveloped heads.

In Savoy cabbage breeding, resistance to pathotypes Pb:0, Pb:1, Pb:2, and Pb:3 is denoted by the abbreviation CR. The genetic resistance of the crop is complex and can be controlled by several genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL), with resistance genes being localized on chromosomes C3 and C8 and exhibiting epistatic interaction.
