Clubroot of Oilseed Rape

A serious disease of oilseed rape caused by the soil-borne protist Plasmodiophora brassicae, which affects the root system, forming pathological galls and leading to plant death.

The disease affects the root system of oilseed rape, often remaining latent until stress periods occur. Tumors and galls form on the roots, with internal tissue appearing whitish and exhibiting characteristic brown-black marbling. As the disease progresses, the root system degrades and rots.

Externally, clubroot manifests on the above-ground parts as stunted development, chlorotic leaf coloration, and loss of turgor during hot weather. With severe infection, plants are easily pulled from the soil, pod setting is reduced, or the crop dies.

The pathogen is characterized by high genetic diversity and an ability to adapt, overcoming varietal resistance through the emergence of new aggressive strains. Oilseed rape breeding utilizes resistance loci, including the broad-spectrum WTS gene, as well as a gene pyramiding strategy to increase the durability of protection.
