The Durmelander variety is a fodder turnip bred by the Belgian research institute ILVO based on local breeding lines, such as Leielander. The crop is valued as a fast-growing intermediate crop, providing a source of feed for livestock during the autumn-winter period.

The plant forms healthy leaves and large root crops. The breeding of the variety was carried out with an emphasis on increasing resistance to clubroot. The variety possesses moderate frost resistance, which distinguishes it from some other types of fodder crucifers.
