The Gandra variety is the result of folk selection and many years of cultivation in the northern region of Portugal. It is a established population variety; information regarding its targeted breeding is absent.

The plant is grown as a vegetable crop. In the Portuguese tradition, both the root vegetables and the leaves, as well as the flower buds of this variety, can be consumed.
