Lodging in lily stems is the loss of a plant's upright position, caused by improper cultivation practices, adverse environmental factors, or the development of fungal diseases.

For the genus Lilium L., lodging is not a quantitative varietal trait, but rather an indicator of deviations in growing conditions. The primary causes of physiological lodging include planting bulbs too shallowly, which fails to provide secure anchoring for the root system, as well as insufficient light, leading to excessive elongation, thinning, and fragility of the shoots.

From an agrotechnical perspective, lodging in tall varieties is often triggered by strong wind loads, necessitating the use of stakes or support netting. Furthermore, this phenomenon can be a symptom of fungal infections, such as gray mold (Botrytis), which cause tissue breakdown in the stem and loss of turgor. In breeding, efforts are directed toward developing varieties with thickened, sturdier stems to ensure commercial quality for cut flower production.
