Lodging in red clover

Trifolium pratense L.

The lodging resistance of red clover is a key trait affecting seed productivity and harvesting efficiency. Tall varieties with a large volume of leaf-stem biomass are the most prone to lodging.

In the reference 71 varieties crop Red clover, where this is mentioned in the description.

When assessing the lodging resistance of red clover, the degree of damage to the stand is visually recorded before harvest, taking into account both the percentage of the area and the orientation of the stems. In resistant varieties, the shoots maintain an upright position even under unfavorable weather conditions, such as excessive moisture or strong wind.

Lodging negatively affects the nutrition of generative organs and the full development of seeds due to stem rotting upon contact with the soil. The risk of lodging increases significantly in dense stands and with excessive nitrogen fertilization, which overly stimulates vegetative growth at the expense of stem strength.
