Cultivation
Cucumis melo L.
An agronomic technique used to protect melons from soil-borne pathogens and improve adaptability to adverse environmental conditions; budding is not used for this crop.
In the reference 36 varieties crop Melon, where this is mentioned in the description.
Melon grafting requires consideration of the anatomical specifics of seedlings, which develop hollow hypocotyls at an early stage. Due to the rapid expansion of the central cavity, which impedes tissue fusion, the procedure is performed at early developmental stages. The main methods are tongue approach grafting, splice grafting, and hole insertion grafting.
Specialized hybrids or other species of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as Lagenaria and interspecific squash hybrids, are used as rootstocks. The choice of rootstock is critical, as the fruit quality and overall yield depend directly on it, noting that watermelon rootstocks are not always suitable for melons.
The purpose of this method is to increase resistance to Fusarium wilt, nematodes, and the fungus Monosporascus cannonballus, as well as to adapt to low soil temperatures and salinity. The developed root system of the rootstock promotes the intensification of scion growth and increases plant productivity.
