Origin of the cultivar — Zinnia x marylandica D. M. Spooner et al.

Work on creating the hybrid began in 1979 at the University of Maryland. To overcome the sterility of primary hybrids, researchers used colchicine-induced chromosome doubling, which made it possible to obtain a stable amphidiploid species with fixed beneficial morphological traits.

The genetic nature of the hybrid determines its high resistance to fungal diseases, such as powdery mildew and Alternaria leaf spot, inherited from Z. angustifolia. This makes the plant better adapted to adverse environmental conditions compared to traditional Zinnia species, combining a compact habit with abundant flowering.
