The causal agent of Alternaria blight in Zinnia x marylandica is the fungus Alternaria zinniae. Symptoms of infection, when resistance is overcome, appear as reddish-brown or purple spots on the leaves, stem lesions capable of causing tip dieback, and brown spots on the flower petals.
Resistance to the pathogen is an inheritable trait: for protection of the allotetraploid, the presence of at least one Z. angustifolia genome in its genotype is sufficient. Specific R-genes for this hybrid have not been described, and the resistance functions as a general cultivar characteristic.
