Tomato Leaf Spots

Solanum lycopersicum L.

A group of tomato diseases caused by various pathogens, characterized by specific symptoms and resistance mechanisms.

In the reference 563 varieties crop Tomato, where this is mentioned in the description.

Leaf mold, caused by Fulvia fulva (Pf), manifests as rounded yellowish spots with a velvety coating on the underside of leaves. The pathogen has races 1.2, 1.2.3, 1.2.3.4, and breeding is conducted through the use of Cf resistance genes (Cf-2, Cf-4, Cf-9). Stemphylium leaf spot, caused by Stemphylium solani (Ss), S. lycopersici (Sl), and S. botryosum (Sbl), is characterized by small brown-black spots up to 3 mm in size with a yellow halo.

Bacterial spot (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria) manifests as black water-soaked spots, affecting stems and fruits. Resistance to it is provided by the Pto and Ptr1 genes. Early blight (Alternaria solani, A. tomatophila) is distinguished by concentric dark brown spots; it is characterized by polygenic resistance, unlike the gene-for-gene interaction seen in leaf mold.
