The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Rhynchosporium secalis, also classified as Rhynchosporium commune. The pathogen infects the leaves and leaf sheaths of the plant, causing the appearance of water-soaked, dirty-green or grey-blue spots.
As the disease develops, the spots take on a glaucous or whitish color; however, the dark margin characteristic of barley is poorly defined or absent. As the infection progresses, the lesions coalesce, leading to premature leaf death, with peak development occurring during the stem elongation to early heading stages.
