The causal agent of the disease is the obligate pathogen Albugo candida, which, in phytopathological terms, is not a true rust fungus. Characteristic snow-white smooth blisters form on the leaves, stems, and pods of mustard, which release a mass of spores upon rupturing. The infection is accompanied by tissue hypertrophy and organ distortion, causing general suppression of the plant.
The resistance of the crop to the pathogen is associated with WRR-type genes, such as WRR-Don, which encodes an NBS-LRR protein, and the Ac2(t) locus. Due to the high variability of the pathogen and the emergence of new virulent races, breeders utilize QTL markers and the evaluation of genotype responses to local pathogen isolates.
