Green manure crops — Sarepta mustard

Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.

Sarepta mustard is used as a drought-tolerant green manure for soil amelioration. Due to its high glucosinolate content, it suppresses pathogens and enriches the soil with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

In the reference 6 varieties crop Brown mustard, where this is mentioned in the description.

Incorporating 35–40 t/ha of Sarepta mustard green mass returns up to 90 kg/ha of nitrate nitrogen, up to 30 kg/ha of mobile phosphorus, and up to 100 kg/ha of exchangeable potassium to the soil. Glucosinolates present in the tissues exert an allelopathic effect, contributing to the suppression of pathogens of the genera Alternaria and Fusarium.

In steppe zone conditions, the growing season of the crop before incorporation is 48–57 days. The main advantage of using this species over white mustard is its increased adaptation to moisture deficit, which allows for effective application of the crop in arid zones.

A critical limitation is the adherence to crop rotation: it is unacceptable to use Sarepta mustard in the same cycle as other brassica crops due to common pathogens and pests. Delaying incorporation until the seed maturity phase poses a risk of self-seeding and field infestation.
