Black oat is used in crop production as a specialized phytosanitary green manure. Its root system actively reduces the population of root-lesion nematodes Pratylenchus penetrans without promoting the reproduction of nematodes of the genus Trichodorus. Furthermore, the crop possesses an allelopathic effect that suppresses weed germination.
In potato crop rotations, black oat is used to control pathogens that cause tobacco rattle disease, which is transmitted by nematodes and provoked by the Tobacco rattle virus. This crop differs from common oat by its denser root system, increased foliage, and specific panicle structure.
