Avena strigosa is distinguished by a tall, thin, and long-lasting non-coarsening straw, which ensures high forage palatability of the vegetative mass even during plant maturation. The crop is effectively used as a source of green fodder, haylage, and silage, demonstrating high productivity on light sandy soils unsuitable for the cultivation of Avena sativa.
As a diploid species (2n=14), Avena strigosa possesses morphological traits and a chemical composition distinct from those of the hexaploid Avena sativa. It is characterized by a higher content of crude protein and dietary fiber in the forage mass, as well as increased genetic resistance to infection by fungi of the genus Fusarium, crown rust, powdery mildew, and loose smut.
